Random Thougts of an Insomniac

So, I'm home for Christmas. It's my first night here. I almost fell asleep on the way home, was on the verge of sleep on my parents' couch watching old movies earlier...
(sidenote, if you have any sort of appreciation for old movies...and to define that, I mean pre-1970s, 80s and 90s movies are not "old" yet! And quite honestly, I wouldn't consider 70s movies old either and maybe not even 60s...you MUST watch the Thin Man movies!! William Powell and Myrna Loy may be my favorite on screen couple EVER!! anywaayyyss...)

I'm practically falling over on my way to my bed, put on Midnight in Paris (a FABULOUS new movie :) ) and now I'm back to my usual sleepless self...of course!

There's no tv in my room here and my laptop and the wireless don't get along so I'm down in the study on their old desktop! Officially feel like I'm in high school again and my mom's gonna wake up and come yell at me for being on AIM and MySpace when I should be up in bed! Except now I'm Pinteresting and blogging with a glass of wine.
Although, she may get ticked that I'm using a regular glass instead of a wine glass...(my "terrible college student ways" haha)

It was so funny that I was watching Myrna Loy earlier and just wishing I could go back and live in the '30s and be her friend!! (When did all the class and beauty and style of that era go out of style and WHY?!) And then I watch Midnight in Paris which basically provides the insight that every era has a "Golden Age" that they wish to go back to but you just need to stop living a life of wishing you could go back somewhere you've never even been and make the most of your present. Maybe even try to do something with your life that will make you a reason that eventually someone will think of today as the "Golden Age"...

But I digress...

(I do love saying that randomly, heh)

Last thought of the night...

You know how they say "life's not fair"...? Well they're damn right!!
And it SUCKS!!!

But.......it's unfair to everyone in its own way, and I bet you can find a lot of people that have way less "fair" lives than you do. So suck it up and get over your petty little problems and think about someone else!

:)

Okay, the desktop doesn't want me to post a video for whatever reason...sooo...

Go listen to Winter Song by Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson ORRR any She & Him Christmas song...or whatever song you want! But preferably Christmas because it's officially Christmas Eve, Eve :)

Hope you all enjoy what you give and receive!

Night, loveess!

Muuuusic Monday :)

...not as fun as Margarita Monday, but still pretty fabulous.

Hello my lovely, lovely readers!

I am having an incredibly wonderfully lazy day!! I work in a few hours, but so far all I've done is watching part 2 of Stephen King's Bag of Bones(which was awesome! watch it!) and do laundry.

Now I'm watching a Netflix I got in the mail the other day:

An almost unrecognizable Zooey Deschanel stars...it's pretty good so far! I already have a favorite line haha:
"I think that if everything that you've done before makes you who you are now, then no matter how ugly it is i'm just gonna have to learn to deal with it. Because right now, it's you and me..."

I'm too lazy to organize the post I was planning on doing so I decided to switch that to tomorrow and do a "Music Monday" post! :)

No theme, just good jams. Here ya go:

Shake it Out: Florence + The Machine....just a really good pump up! She's so good at being positive, I love it.

"It's hard to dance with the devil on your back so shake him off!"

23: Jimmy Eat World - it's an oldie but a goodie; I'm kinda stuck on it right now. It's one of those songs that comes and goes but when it comes back around it gets stuck with me for a while.

"You'll sit alone forever if you wait for the right time. What are you hoping for?"

Poison & Wine: The Civil Wars - This song is absolutely beautiful. These two have the most amazing musical chemistry and produce some of the most beautiful harmonies I have ever heard. (Props to my friend Elise for informing me of who sings this, I loved this song and The Civil Wars completely separately until she told me! haha)

"Your hands can heal, your hands can bruise. I don't have a choice, but I still choose you."

okay, last one!

The Christmas Song: She & Him - Because Zooey Deschanel has an amazing voice, and because Christmas is in 6 dayyyss!! :)

"Although it's been said, many times, many ways...Merry Christmas to you..."

Hope you are having a beautiful holiday season. I hope your Christmas brings you everything you deserve and more!

Thanks for reading! (and listening, this time...)

friendship

“Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art, like the universe (for God needed not to create). It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things that give value to survival. “ – CS Lewis

People will come and go, in and out of your life, for your whole life.  But there will always be those select few (other than your family, of course) that will be there forever; even if it’s a coming and going kind of forever.
Those are the ones that matter, and you can usually tell who they’re going to be almost right off the bat. They put their own needs aside for yours, not always, especially as you get closer! But, even when they’re letting you put their needs ahead of yours for once, they’re still thinking about you.
When you find people who will think of others ahead of themselves, hold onto them! There are so many selfish assholes (excuse the language if it bothers you) in this world!  DO NOT waste your time on them.
People have told me almost my whole life that I am “nice to a fault”…and it’s true so much! I will let selfish people in my life and then just let them WAYY over stay their welcome.  I’m getting better about it, but DO NOT follow my example. These people have no place in your life. They will ALWAYS think about themselves before you and that’s not right.
Not that I’m saying every second of your life think about everyone else first! You need to think about yourself first sometimes…seriously! But when it comes to relationships of any kind, it is not supposed to revolve around one person and one person alone. If you let the right kind of people in your life they will think about you before themselves and you will think about them before yourself and there will be an equal amount of give and take.
Selfish assholes have no place in our lives; be nice, think about others, but don’t let people just walk all over you because you expect people to be as selfless are you are.

Long story short, the people that matter are going to stick around.

The people that matter and add value to your life are going to be the people who don’t let petty things disturb the relationship. They’re going to listen to you and care.  And you will listen to them and care.
Nothing is a task or a hassle or an obligation with these relationships.
It just works.

(and yes I’m talking about EVERY type of relationship: friends, dating, family…every significant relationship)

Okay and this is the song i was jammin' while writing this...it's awesome! enjoy :)

let me be...

Today something hit me that bothered me...quite a bit...which bothered me even more because the past week has been nothing but utter fabulousness!

(Quick side-track!)
I hope everyone had a FABULOUS Thanksgiving!! Mine was, without a doubt, pure amazingness. Not only was there tons of cooking, eating and wine-drinking, but there was amazing family time as well! I could not have asked for a more relaxing or entertaining time.  I love every last person that was here this Thanksgiving!

FABULOUS!

(Back on track...)

Anyways, this even plays a little into my last post, it hit me like a ton of bricks!(I've totally always wanted to be able to use that expression! heh)
It's so hard for someone to be their own person and be true to who they are without someone critiquing it, these days! Which is incredibly sad. I mean, yes, we open ourselves up to critique when we allow our lives to be broadcast on the internet through Facebook, Twitter and...well...blogging, haha! But, I just got this feeling today...why can't we just let everyone be who they are without being critical about it.
Those of you who know me may think that this sounds a little hypocritical...(those of you who don't know me, I can be suuuuch a bitch about random people...i'm definitely capable of 'super-judginess'...)
But, today I just couldn't stop thinking about how much everyone judges each other.  It's almost just a natural reflex for most of us.
If you are sitting here thinking, "uhh, maybe you're just a judgey bitch with a guilty conscience. i do NOT judge people!" I want you to really, really think...you know you do it! And if you really, really and truly don't...then congratulations! I'm jealous.
I know there are bigger problems in our world right now...much, much bigger. But, I honestly think it's horrible how we have gotten to the point that we cannot just let people be who they are, without judgement.

Try it sometime.

The "Twilight" Obsession...yup.

I’m almost ashamed to be doing this; it’s such a pointless thing to bother arguing about!!!

People really just need to chill on the whole Twilight subject. Honestly. BOTH directions…sobbing little teenyboppers: IT’S NOT REAL! Haters: IT’S NOT YOUR LIFE!
This is going to be aimed at the haters, mostly because I think the passionate hatred of a series of books/movies and the people that like them is a liiiiitle out of hand.
But, I will address the “Twihards” as well because their obsession runs a little deep.
I wouldn’t categorize myself in either of these categories, but I wouldn’t call myself neutral either. I read the books in high school. I read the first three books before they were “cool”.  I remember starting to read the first one on a school trip to Costa Rica because a friend told me it would be an awesome trip book.  It started slow, and when people would ask me what it was about I was like, “I don’t really know, apparently there’s some vampire who falls in love with a human…? Yeah, I know it sounds stupid, but I’m bored on this plane.”
Next thing I know, my roommate finds me in our hotel bathroom reading because I couldn’t put it down, but I didn’t want to wake her with the light! Haha
Stephenie Meyer has a great way of writing that connects with the average teenage girl.  I bought the next two and read them over the course of a couple weeks…very often staying up till dawn because I was so hooked.  Then I had to wait somewhere around a month for “Breaking Dawn” to come out; it was painful! Hahaha
The movies are…ehh...okay. And I don’t walk around wearing “I heart Vampires”; “Team Edward/Jacob” etc shirts…Therefore, as much as I loved the books I do not consider myself a “Twihard”; I often don’t think about it that much anymore until another movie comes out.
I honestly think the people taking the time to literally hate the series and the people that like it, and especially make an effort to show it, need to just get a damn life! CHILL!
I was inspired to write this as a response to an article I read about how Stephenie Meyer has ruined us. At first glance, I laughed. This dude did not really know what he was talking about, and when people try to passionately argue just for the sake of passionate argument but have no idea what they are talking about it really amuses me!
Then I decided to address what he said:
I’m just going to do it generally so this post doesn’t go on forever.
He talks about how the fantasy has ruined expectations for love, men, marriage etc. and all these girls who love Twilight will be forever ruined because all of the great qualities thrown into one person give an unreal expectation that girls will never find…
Well sir, what are your thoughts on fairy tales and Prince Charming……? While Charming may be human, the rest is pretty much all ridiculous qualities thrown into one person that is an unreal expectation.
And just to quickly address the whole Bella issue…she was not in the least supposed to be “the embodiment of femininity”.  Stephenie Meyer was trying to connect with the average teenage girl and therefore made Bella awkward, pale, clumsy, tomboyish, insecure etc…no she is no ideal heroine, and she shouldn’t be.
Yes, the way she goes catatonic when Edward leaves is PATHETIC. And gross.
But other than that, she is supposed to connect to the average teenage girl.
THAT’S HOW YOU MARKET TO TEENAGERS, FIRST OF ALL!
The majority of all “teen appeal” movies, books etc. the heroine is the shy, awkward, clumsy wreck because she overcomes the evil, bitchy, tall blonde.
DUH!
(oh, and just to throw it out there…her only ambition was to become a vampire before she turned 19, she wasn’t a huge fan of the whole wedding thing…)
SEEEEEE how stupid it is to try to ARGUE about this stuff?! I’m making points about VAMPIRES!!! DDUUUMMMBB!!!!
I see nothing wrong with girls having ideals for their future husbands.  No one should ever have to settle!!
On the other hand, girls need to realize that this is aaallllll fiction. As much as you would love Edward Cullen or Jacob to jump up into your second story bedroom and sweep you off your feet it WILL NOT EVER HAPPEN!
Mostly because vampires and werewolves are not real and humans can’t leap into second story windows…
Don’t hold your breath for Edward Cullen, Jacob or even Prince Charming for that matter, but DO NOT simply settle for the “next best thing” that comes into your life because too many people harp on your ideals.
I think if everyone would just take a breath, step back and remember that they’re arguing about impossible fictitious events, characters etc…we could all just CHILL and let everyone live their lives as they want to.
If some girl wants to like a series of books/movies you have no right or reason to HATE her for it. And if someone doesn’t want to like it, don’t shove it down their throats!
Everyone, worry about your own damn selves and stop freaking out about FICTION!

Playing Catch Up

So, if I had any readers before, I'm pretty certain I've lost you...totally my fault, it's been a good five months since I posted...COME BACK TO ME!!! :)

Honestly, I've been thinking about posting and updating for a while now...but now I have some free time and some procrastinating/brainstorming to do.

Sooooo let's get this life update going...we'll make it quick!

My internship ended amazingly...

I got a new job...

School:

I'm taking a traditional photography class! i LOVE it! It makes me so sad that film photography is such a dying art form...Nothing beats being in the dark room with some great music and getting in the zone printing photos.
My color theory class is actually going okay. I kind of enjoy painting a little bit now :)
I'm not failing statistics this time around! always a good thing, right?!

ONLY TWO MORE SEMESTERS AFTER THIS ONE!!!!!!!! I CANNOT WAIT TO BE DONE WITH SCHOOL AND SAN MARCOS!!!!

I'm back on the internship hunting trail. Everyone pray, cross your fingers, knock on wood...whatever, just send good thoughts/luck/ju-ju my way in whatever ways you do....I'm hoping to be in Virginia at CNS News this summer!!!!

New "addictions":

Pinterest...there's nothing else that needs to be said. If you haven't been yet...GO!

Target...okay, so it's not a new addiction exactly, but it's definitely a legitimate addiction.

GREEN TEA! probably the healthiest of my addictions. Either with honey and lemon, or honey and soy milk. SOOOO good!

Once Upon a Time, GREAT new show on ABC. Reminds you the darkness behind original fairy tales. Seriously, I'll tell my kids the "Disney" version of fairy tales when they're little...but, at the appropriate age they will read the Grimm versions!

Essie "Matte About You" top coat...I'm always addicted to nail polish...but this topcoat is amazing! LOVE the matte finish :)

TIGHTS! with dresses, with shorts, with big sweaters....and boots! :)

What else....

I dyed my hair again! It's a dark reddish brown, so far I've gotten a lot of compliments...never thought of adding red to my hair, I've lightened and darkened but never reddened. LOVING it :)

Oh! I re-pierced my nose.

I don't have time to be crafty because of school and work taking up MY LIIIFEE...but I have a list of things to make over Christmas break thanks to Pinterest (...seriously, goooo!)

I need some creative minds to help me brainstorm for my final photography project of the semester. I need a theme. The project is basically just consistency...have a consistent theme. I can't come up with anything "original"...blahhh!

Oh, other than Pinterest, my reccomendation for today is:

20 minutes-a-day...Strength-Cardio-Abs X 3.
I've missed this great muscle soreness!!
DOOOOOOOO IT!
Jillian kicks your ass, but it's awesome!

mmmmmmmmmmmmk, byeeee for today.

Remember to be thankful, daily!

what i learned...

So I know I slacked and should have posted this sooner, but here's the list of tips for success, both in the Communications world and in general!
(Yeah, I need a break from writing my article...hahah)

Okay so based on the conversations I had with the amazing people in the communications office at the OAG here's some advice:

-New York and DC are glamorized in the minds of communications (more specifically journalism and PR) majors; they can be great opportunities, but they also can be overrated and HIGHLY expensive.
-However, coming from the mouth of someone who spent 4 years in DC...great opportunity!
-Make contacts! (especially with the media - as a PR person)
- be enterprising!
- always be thinking ahead; especially in terms of electronic/internet/social media
-travel as much as possible! it's important to expand your point of view and your grasp on the world and your world.
-don't do what you think people expect of you simply for that reason...do what you love and want to do, it's the only way to be successful.
-never "park" yourself in any one specialty, always be open to new things.
-be able to make mistakes and take responsibility for them...then learn from them.
...even if you make even the biggest blunder and can admit it and learn from it, you won't be afraid to make mistakes, you'll realize they're a part of life and an excellent learning experience.
-take advantage of the opportunities provided to you along the way

For people thinking of working in the world of politics:

-work on a local campaign to see if it's something you enjoy working around and make sure it's someone you like and support
-observe press conferences from all perspectives
-when you're representing someone: remember to think ahead!

:) back to the article, loveess!!

a day with the big dogs

Today I got the amazing opportunity to hang out at the Communications Office of the OAG at the Price Daniel Building downtown. Yes, a mere walk down the hall from Attorney General Abbott's office.

I could not have imagined a better experience.  I met and sat down with 5 of the most kind, open and intelligent people that I have gotten the pleasure to sit and talk with.  All of them, including the Director of Communications, took time out of their day to meet me, talk with me about where I would like to go with my career and give me extremely valuable advice to help me succeed.

They all were genuinely interested in seeing that I get equipped with information and experiences to help me succeed in the future.

I left the office today shaking because of the adrenaline high I was on from spending time with these people.
I went to lunch with two of them and got to sit and have intelligent conversation about current events and get advice from media relations professionals! I felt...grown up! (as completely un-grown up and that sounds ahhaha!)

I met people who are willing to stay in contact with me, give me further advice, and be a contact and reference for me in the future.

I met on girl who I honestly hope I can say I have had as much experience as she has by the time I'm her age.  She graduated from Texas in 2007, about a week later she moved to DC.  Worked for reps on both the House and Senate side; lived and worked in DC for 4 years.  Came back to Austin, worked with Senator Cornyn and now has an office right next to the Director of Communications of the OAG.
If I could clone a career and make it mine, I would SO do it with hers!

This internship keeps on inspiring me to focus on my future and work harder than I have ever worked before.

I cannot wait to get my career going!

(Next post: tips for success, as directly and indirectly advised from media relations professionals...)

Nighty night, lovveess!!

Prayer at Graduation

Okay, every morning I go into work it's part of my routine to read "clips" organized by someone in the agency about the OAG and such.
There have been tons of articles and op-eds about this prayer at a graduation in Medina, Texas. Some agnostic parents tried to get a ruling saying the valedictorian couldn't say a prayer at graduation.  The OAG ended up stepping in and fighting for it and the prayer was allowed.

Many people have stepped out to say that he is pandering towards Christians and exploiting the situation to get more supporters.

I would like to remind people of a little thing called the 1st Amendment which gives us the right to freedom of speech.  It is not any interest to the government if some girl, graduating at some small high school in Texas, wants to say a prayer for herself and her fellow graduates.  She is not forcing people to participate, they can make a phone call, step away, talk to their neighbor or put their fingers in their ears and sing a little ditty if they so choose.

Trying to claim that this is unconstitutional is highly misguided, as well.
Not only does Congress open daily with a prayer; but also, neither the Constitution, nor the 1st Amendment state anything regarding "separation of church and state." In fact, if you want to quote the 1st Amendment, it clearly states, "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, nor prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

Now onto the "pandering to Christians" aspect of all of this.

I have not yet had the opportunity to meet the Attorney General, but I have been met with nothing but praise and admiration for him. One morning, while grabbing coffee on the way to my second interview for the job, it came up that that's where I was heading and the manager at the coffee shop told me good luck, and if I got the chance, to tell AG Abbott that "everyone down here in San Marcos really appreciates him." Everyone that works for him adores him. The only negativity I have encountered about the OAG has to do with parents who are unhappy with their child support cases or people unhappy with their taxes.

Now let's take a closer look at this, considering that this prayer has nothing to do with the Constitution, etc, IF the AG took the side of the agnostic parents, would he NOT be pandering to them?

If you want to take a negative view on this, go ahead.  Looking at it from (what I'm trying hard, but not completely succeeding at) a semi-nonbiased perspective, he was going in the way of the First Amendment, not pandering.  Restricting the "free exercise" of religion, going against the 1st Amendment, would most definitely be pandering.

Wanna make it simple? The parents could have simply and respectfully asked the valedictorian to exclude the prayer.  It would have still been her choice, but it would have been much less ridiculous!

avoidance

Okay, so this isn't going to be a deep post about emotional avoidance...it's literally me avoiding doing things!
haha, woops!
That, my friends, is what I happen to be avoiding. 5 days worth of 3 people's dishes. Our kitchen sink and dishwasher have been broken/backed up for FIVE DAYS! It took our apt complex that long to answer my work order! BAHH!! So this will be a post of completely random proportions...
THIS girl...of many names...turned 21 today/last night.  This one, right here, was my first new friend of college.  She was my next door neighbor in the dorm and just popped on over one day and grabbed my roommate and I to go do something.
THIS....was the BEST...burger EVER!! "Fiesta Jalapeno Salmon Burger"...oh dear lord, i LOVE HEB's seafood counter. I randomly went home this past weekend to get out of town and my mother sent my brother and I to HEB to get dinner with her credit card...LOVE going home! haha top this off with sweet potato fries and Riesling...perfection!
I also discovered my new favorite drink...Mango Margarita. BEST THING EVER. And yes, that is Chili's skillet queso in the background. SO fat but SO delicious!
This song has become my new anthem recently.  Not only because Sara Bareilles is ridiculously talented and I would give ANYTHING to be able to sing like her, but also because it's incredibly wise.
If you look at this as a love song, I think you're missing a lot of what she's saying.  It's about grabbing every chance to live your dreams and do something for yourself and make something of yourself. It's about not getting caught up in disappointment, but embracing EVERYTHING and making things happen for yourself.

"There's too many things I haven't done yet, there's too many sunsets I haven't seen ... I've been talkin' to God, don't know if it's helping or not, but surely something has got to, got to, GOT TO give, cause I can't keep waiting to LIVE!"

Always be inspired, lovvees!

Off to do the dishes ;)

shmeh

sooo internship is going pretty well. today was tiring, i just read and organized and read and read and read stuff all day.  hence the "shmeh" hah

anyways, being surrounded by law lingo, law students, attorneys etc has me thinking about law school.  I don't actually know if it's the novelty of working for the OAG and it's going to wear off; or if I actually desire to go to law school.
Do I know that it will be good for my career? Well, yeah...
But do I actually want to take more classes, study harder, prepare for and take the LSATs?? at the moment, it sounds like a great idea. fun? not necessarily...but a good idea? yes.
Not to mention how damn expensive law school can be. Plus Texas State doesn't have a pre-law program...I would just load some more polisci and philosophy classes into my semesters.  Which I'm probably going to do anyway, I definitely know I need to take more polisci and would love to take some more philosophy; hopefully it won't delay my graduation.

I guess the point is, it's definitely something to consider, and if I had gotten this whole "thinking seriously about my future" thing down from the start then maybe part of the decision wouldn't have to do with putting off my graduation.

As usual, learn from my mistakes if you can!

I think we need something uplifting now...haha

That should do it, lovees! hahaha Gotta do some article writing now.

long time, no see!

hello friends,

I know you've missed me...I apologize for my lengthy absence, my computer took a shit and there was tons of crap involved with replacing it...

So let's see...
The Attorney General internship has begun!! Everyone I work with is amazing, so far and I got my 1st two article assignments on Wednesday!! I'll definitely be coming here for practice and feedback :)

They are both for the July editions of their division and Texas OAG newsletters.  One is for the wellness section, any topic of my choosing. The other is an introductory piece of all the OAG interns(in the STATE!)

Friday I went and observed child support hearings and negotiations in court. It was pretty sketchy, but also very interesting! Sadly, I was on my lunch break during the most exciting part...someone got kicked out of the court room for being belligerent! Unfortunately I am not at liberty to give much more detail on my day than that.  It was definitely something I would consider doing again.

OH! So my birthday was about two weeks ago! TWENTY-ONE!! woohoo! haha

I don't remember most of the night before when we went out to the bars, but the day of was both extremely fun and exhausting.  I got to spend it with some of my favorite people floating the San Marcos River :)
Last weekend I went home to celebrate with my family, went to a super nice and yummy mexican place, got some queso fundido, margaritas, enchiladas verdes....yuumm!! And the next morning we had brunch and mimosas (double yumm!)
I got extremely spoiled, too. I had to get a new laptop(and may i say, i LOVE my new baby macbook pro!) so I figured that would be my present bc it was so damn expensive. Apparently with my good grades and new internship my dad decided i deserved a little more, so he got me an iPhone 4! woop!
LOVE it!!!

So now, I'm applying for jobs since my internship is unpaid and just being super busy! I love it! I feel responsible and productive and it's a really good feeling to be doing something that you know is really going to benefit you in the long run!

I'm sure there's tons more I can say about the time I had no computer, but for tonight i'll just leave you with this video(because I've decided Miranda and I are the same person...except she's GORGEOUS and has Blake Shelton and is famous and...okay so not really the SAAME, but you know...)

lessons learned...part 2!

Oh yes, I did decide to make this a two-parter.  The past couple months have been FULL of my learning lessons through experiences.  Some are good; most are those "damn! coulda-shoulda-woulda" experiences.

Take today for instance:
I screwed up my and my friend's project(that was going to be AMAZING) because of a small, stupid mistake.  We've been video interviewing to make our last website about professors and after almost 10 minutes my camera died. DUMBDUMBDUMBDUMBDUMB!!!!!! He was kind of annoyed, and I do NOT blame him! I should have realized how much we had done the day before and charged the battery over night last night. Lesson learned.
Now, our project will definitely be amazing still!! Guaranteed!!! I will definitely post it up on here for ya'll to see our wonderful work :)

Anyway, I think I had a mini anxiety attack when it was all over.  I think I've been injected with something that sucks the life out of batteries...my camera died, my computer died, my camera died AGAIN (luckily, we got most everything we needed the second time), and then on my way home, mid-conversation with my mother, my phone died! I freaked out. I can admit it. Luckily, I was home a couple seconds later and plugged it in before my phone interview.

Speeeaaaking of which :) I've been officially offered an internship! Entercom, a huge radio broadcasting company, has a branch in Austin with 3 stations.  The promotions and events department wants ME! I can't get over it when I have good interviews!! It went fabulously! I was super nervous about it but it was great! And at the end of the conversation she offered it to me!

One problem: second interview with the AG's office is next week...both, while very different experiences, are fabulous learning experiences! If I get offered the AG one too I, honestly and as crazy as I may sound, do not know how I'll pick!! I mean some people may look at me like I'm a crazy person and wonder how I would have trouble choosing between a radio station and a Judicial official...but honestly they would both be fabulous opportunities!

I believe that by the middle of next week my life will just settle and I will physically feel the weight that will be lifted off my shoulders! Just in time for my 21st birthday :) :) :)
And then right after that things will start to get crazy again! But a good crazy.

Okay people, learn from my experiences:

  • flash drives are your best friends! get the biggest one you can afford and keep it on hand at all times!
  • back up batteries! soo necessary!!
    • and if you are doing a project such as mine: keep chargers, backups and MORE backups on hand!!
  • take care of important things; my computer is falling apart after only 3 years, i don't care if you're the richest person in the world and can buy a new laptop every day! take care of it! if you're like me, it has your life on it and if it just dies, you'll have a panic attack! and no one wants to have to witness that!
  • organize! organize! organize!
  • interviews: whether interviewer or interviewee; it will only go as well as you prepare for it! sometimes you get lucky, but if you want a guaranteed good interview: do your homework on the person/organization, take notes, keep necessary things on hand(resumes, information, notes and a list of questions)
  • social media: come on people! it's pounded in your head! do NOT display your ridiculousness online, not only do I not care how many times you can curse in one measly status update at 5 am (let alone what you're doing awake at 5 am!) or how many drinks you can consume; but businesses really will look you up and your early morning/late night, drunken, stoned etc rants, raves and pictures WILL bite you in the ass! c'mon guys, try to be a little bit classy!
    • and I am not judging, here! I've had my share of drunk, sober, angry, sad rants! I've posted and been tagged in my share of not-so-classy pictures...buuuuut, I grew up, quit and untagged! DOOO IT!
  • cheesy things that could be your new best friends: researching things you hear about and don't know enough about; learning new words daily(yes, i'm trying to get around saying "word of the day" anything); watch/listen to/read more news...keeping up with current events will help you in everything...and develop opinions, your own opinions
  • READ, READ, READ, READ!! every day. read anything. read everything. reading keeps you up on current events, keeps you up on past events, increases your vocabulary and your knowledge, increases your writing skills, and most importantly takes your through the lives and experiences of the characters and helps you learn!

lessons learned...

So, I finally got the interview I've been dying for, and I think I might have blown it!

Okay, I only blew one question, but it was a question that made me look like an air head idiot!

"What are your thoughts on free market economics?"
"Uhhh, ummm, well...."
"Do you know what that means?"
"Well, not completely....uhhhh..."
".....Okay...."

Really?! I claim I want to work in journalism, and do PR for a news organization and I can't answer a basic question.  I blame it on my nerves, and the fact that I have not watched/kept up with the news as much as I, as a journalism student, should.  "Free market economics" aka CAPITALISM!

Duhh!! The reason our country exists, and the only way it will survive!! If only he had asked me about "capitalism" instead!!!
Well, I followed up the phone interview with an email letting him know that I do in fact know what that is and am a little embarrassed about fumbling that question.  Also letting him know that no matter what the outcome of this decision is, I fully intend to keep learning and earn my way into the world and the opportunities I plan on being involved in and that I hope he will remember me when I contact him in the future! Virginia will be seeing me!!! (unless something better comes my way; but, at least while i'm still in school and still learning, this is the best i can imagine!!)

I feel good about it despite fumbling because I let him know how hard I intend on working to get where I want to be!

In the spirit of keeping up with the news:

pray for everything...

...but especially those in Tuscaloosa and the other areas hit by tornadoes yesterday.

A mile wide tornado is just one of the tornadoes in the outbreak yesterday...

This is the aftermath....

Pray for them, guys.  Rescue attempts today were nothing but recovery.  The death toll is rising and people are still missing!

MUSIC DAYYY!!!! :)

Alrighty lovveess, enjoy the beats! :)

Uncharted - Sara Bareilles
First off, this song is fabulous!! So upbeat and hopeful! Secondly, if you can recognize most of the musicians it will crack you up! I wish I could meet these guys...they're goofy as hell!

Kiss with a Fist - Florence and the Machine

So, I'm always a fan of Florence, as I'm sure you've noticed.  This song came on my shuffle on my traffic-filled drive back from Houston to San Marcos this weekend.  It's punchy(pardon the horribly pun) and energetic.   And no, it's not about domestic violence, it's about emotional and psychological beat downs while trying to uphold a relationship. (I got this from Florence's Myspace)

And last but not least....drumroll please....
Give a Little - HANSON

Okay, I'll go ahead and say upfront that I stole this from the Inspiration Tree blog.  But, c'mon!! I HAD TO!!! It's flippin' HANSON!!! WHAT?! hahahaha It's a great song too!! I'm about to go download it!!
I just couldn't believe it and I was inspired.  Hanson inspired my music day....

Just can't believe it.

AAND, HAPPY EARLY 21ST BIRTHDAY TO MY WONDERFUL FRIEND, MEGHAN!!

Busy, busy, busy....

Hello on this incredibly stressful and humid day!

Taking a break from the stress to be momentarily lazy and say hello to all my lovely readers(which is probably about 2 people, but whatever!! hahaha)
sooooo
Friday was my big deal interview with the Attorney General's office!
It went amazingly!! I couldn't believe it, it made my day! If i get and accept this internship I will be working with the Communications department within the Child Support Division of the OAG; I will be working on cases, writing articles, editing press releases and even going to observe in court!!
So all that's left is my criminal background check and one more interview with my supervisor...bahh!! :)

Easter weekend was fabulously full of relaxation, laughs and lots of wine with the family! :)

Today was my big group presentation in my Research Methods class...that went well!
Also, interviewed at the Austin Convention & Visitor's Bureau, Music and Film division.  That would be an AWESOME internship and opportunity.  I don't think my interview went very well though :(
I was 5 minutes late to begin with, stupid Austin traffic!! blahh!!!
Ugh, but it's in this gorgeous building on Congress Ave, and they are so involved with the Austin community!! They are huge in marketing Austin to travelers, making sure events have bands, trying to get local artists "out there", getting movies and commercials and any other kind of film to come film in Austin...it would be suuuuch an amazing opportunity!! And so much fun!! But the interview was short and I was flustered...meh : /
After my little lazy blurb I'll have to get back to studying, working on another project and filling out my application for the U-Star!

OH! So I'm trying to come up with a good book to read this summer...I'm thinking...Water for Elephants, Wicked and then starting Atlas Shrugged....
anyone have any suggestions??

need a laugh??

:)

zach galifianakis...my official chill pill!

So, tomorrow morning, 10:30 AM, is my interview with the Attorney General's office for my internship...

I am FUH-REAKING out!! haha

Final project for my web design class is a group project, my friend Jena and I are doing a website on 3 professors at TXST that do crazy-awesome things other than being professors...made the homepage for the site today; it's pretty awesome :)

Anyway, I'm sitting here researching my heart out on the Attny General and watching 'It's Kind of a Funny Story'...it's helping my nerves, but I'm about to dose myself with Benadryl and pass out so I can actually get sleep! haha

Positive energy for my interview is highly requested, lovveess!!

oh and this movie is great...i mean, Zach Galifianakis AND Queen+David Bowie!!

a good day

Once again had a wonderful weekend!! Today, though, today was a good day that made me think, "Wow, I need to blog about this day! This is a genuinely good day!"

I woke up to an email setting up an internship interview for this Friday morning with THE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE in Austin!!! Super pumped! That, will have you wake up in a good mood!

I also had a reply about an internship with Austin Music and Film Office and by mid-afternoon had an interview set up for Monday!!! ahh!! I got two interviews set up in one day!
It's uplifting, especially when you feel like you're not going to get an interview at all...
I picked up another application to re-apply at the University Star for the summer today, as well.  And I have a friend who has put in a good word for me, so that's helpful this time around!
And as a shout out to her: She got her internship at the New Braunfels newspaper! So super congrats to her on that one!
Wrote my first press release today, feel pretty confident about it. :)
OH! I registered for fall and got all my classes that I needed!!

My friend Brittany just started as a consultant for Mary Kay and had her first Mary Kay Party tonight! It was a lot of fun, and I discovered that I would totally wear only Mary Kay makeup if I wasn't on the tightest budget EVER!!! So I basically figured out that my summer is going to be CRAZY busy; but that's good right?! But seriously: internship, working at the paper and hopefully a job since both of those things are great for my future but completely unpaid...blahhh

Tomorrow after class I get to go shop for interview clothes!! woohoo :)

So here's a great quote I came across on StumbleUpon the other day:

"We are all alone, born alone, die alone, and -- in spite of True Romance magazines -- we shall all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the whole way. I do not say lonely -- at least, not all the time -- but essentially, and finally, alone. This is what makes your self-respect so important, and I don't see how you can respect yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness."
Hunter S. Thompson (The Proud Highway: Saga of a Desperate Southern Gentleman 1955-67)

enjoy the newest video from one of my (now) favorite bands :)

don't forget your self-respect, lovveess! be wonderful!

stress

The past couple days have turned into somewhat of a stress-fest.
The end of the semester is closing in on us and I canNOT wait for it to be summer so all this stress is DONE! I am in desperate need of a job, money is not my strong suit, I quit my last job in January for two reasons: the good one-to focus on school and bringing up my GPA; the bad one- I was OVER that job!!
I mean I agree that you should be happy in what you do; but, I need money! I also need to learn to budget better. heh.
I am in the process of searching for a summer internship and as the semester draws to a close so do my chances of getting one.  I heard back from my top choice and when I went to look for writing samples, I kinda fell short.  And the one I thought was my best; well let's just say it wasn't as good as I thought.  But, I went ahead and sent in my pathetic writing samples.
I have all these projects closing in on me and just don't feel like my groups are really getting anywhere.

I know I'm being a total Negative Nancy tonight; but I'm tired, stressed and annoyed and plan on putting in a movie and crashing out early! Sometimes you just need to vent and get things off your chest.  People around me tell me I'm far too hard on myself, and I know this well!

Maybe tomorrow will be a better day.  I just have to trust that it's all in the Lord's hands and He knows what's best for me for this summer; just like my momma just told me.

BUT--I will totally accept any words of encouragement haha
AND if anyone knows of places looking for employees and/or interns in the PR, journalism or photography fields in the Austin/San Marcos/San Antonio area...those would be some pretty encouraging words! haha

Night, lovvees!

swing life away

Well, hello friends!

I feel like I was gone for a while...no worries, I have not left you hanging! I took a weekend to simply chill and have fun last weekend and it turned out pretty busy!

Quick recap?
But, of course!

Friday was a gorgeous day and a day of laundry doing and bbq attending! Met some new awesome people and at some damn good bbq!!! :)
Oh and my friend and I discovered a new dance move...the cat daddy...yeah, you heard me! hahaha

Saturday was yet, another gorgeous day, involving poolside relaxation and then....drumroll...the ultimate 80s party!! It ended up getting a noise complaint and we had to move elsewhere...but it was still a very good and fun night full of laughs and my favorite people...

This is my favorite couple, and my san marcos family; and, this picture sums us up pretty perfectly! haha

These are two of my best friends in the entire world! :)

Sunday marked the first float of the season for me(this is a big deal up in the hill country)! FABULOUS day!! ab-fab, sweetie darlings; ab-fab!

Today is the second day of a new diet...my seester and I are doing it together.  The 17 Day Diet. I love it! It's 4 cycles...3 of 17 days each and the last is maintaining...
It's not some crazy fad diet. It doesn't leave you starved. I do miss my little 100 calorie snacks a little, but I honestly do feel more refreshed and happy. Our fridge is stuffed full of fruit and veggies and it's amazing!
I feel good about this! And proud of us :)
And today my only class was cancelled and I have been extremely productive! Even sent out 5 more internship emails and followed up on the previous ones! I'd appreciate any good energy you can send my way with these: prayer, fingers crossed, knocking on wood...etc!

And here is another high school favorite that i recently rediscovered and truly love:
Swing Life Away- Rise Against

"i've got some friends, some that i hardly know; and we've had some times that i wouldn't trade for the world! we chase these days down with talks of places that we will go..."

hope you're feeling as ab-fab as i am, lovvees!

looming gov't shutdown

All the fear surrounding this shutdown is a factor of fear mongering! A temporary shutdown does not mean that people will suddenly be running rampant in the streets, it simply means that government offices(some of which probably don't even need to exist) will temporarily be closed until they can figure out what they need to do concerning the budget.  There will still be police, firemen, post men, etc...
Is it really devastating or terrifying that national parks will be closed for a bit?
Yes, it is hopeful that it does not last too long so that people can start getting paid again; but, it's not this huge scary thing that media and gov't officials are making it out to be.  Once the clock hits midnight, if the shut down happens, there will still be power, police, food, jobs, etc...
This is not the end of the world, it is temporary and life will still go on as it has.  I have seen things about military not being paid while the government is shutdown, and if that is the case I pray that this does not last even a week.  I have military family and so on that count I hope this doesn't happen.  But, other than that, this IS NOT THAT SCARY! Calm down, have a drink, keep on having fun.

And just so that you know I haven't suddenly turned into a politics only blogger....here's some music to countdown to the shutdown by:
it's all about the pursuit of happiness, lovvees :)

campus politics

Due to recent editorials, ASG (Associated Student Government) elections and legislations passed by the current administration there has been quite…an uproar.

The current (or now former) ASG vice-president lashed out at the University Star (Texas State’s newspaper) on, none other than, Facebook recently.
Editors are being lashed out at and lashing back (as much as they can).
Being friends with a current U-Star writer, and vying to work for the paper myself, I decided I would make my own opinion known on all of this, since technically Star employees cannot, themselves, lash back unless anonymously.

Issue #1: ASG vice-president whining on his Facebook about newspaper editorials.
I’ve been doing some homework on this whole situation and, honestly, it’s been quite an entertaining process. I would just like to start off with how completely professional it is for the ASG VP to complain about the mean old journalists writing about him on his FACEBOOK! (Yes, that is sarcasm in print)
He keeps challenging the Star to place names on the editorial articles in “The Main Point”.   He also defends his legislative decision by criticizing money spent on the paper.  Granted, there are plenty of ways costs could be cut at the paper, there are always leftover issues and such things, but he’s not actually trying to get that accomplished.

(“The Main Point” is the editorial section of the UStar attributed to, simply, the Ed-Board.)

I’m sorry, but you’re not Humphrey Bogart or James Cagney shouting at the “coppers” to ‘show their face’; or, the Joker yelling at Batman to do the same, for those less affluent in film noir.

If you can’t handle being criticized, anonymously or not, on your legislative moves without turning to Facebook to cry about it then PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don’t go into politics.  For the sake of, not only the public that will have to deal with your whining and antics, but also yourself, you might crack under the pressure of local, state or national politics.

Issue #2: VP and others associated complaining about editorial bias.
I have one word for you: DUH!
Come on, people; you know better than that! Quick lesson: an editorial is an opinion piece, aka: editorial section is made for open bias.  This is also one reason it may be anonymous, dim wit! IF members of the ed board happen to write an article with a byline it will not (or should not) show open bias; however, if you have read an article attributed to them in “The Main Point” you will know and possibly be able to read into their bias in their non-editorial articles.

Issue #3: The Alumni Bricks:
The issue, it seems, that may have started all this controversy.
$3,000 of student fees is being put toward the marketing of “Bobcat Bricks”.  This is a brick, engraved with your name, installed by the new bobcat statue. You buy the brick for $100 when you graduate, if you want one.  Okay, this sounds kind of cool; you will be immortalized at Texas State once you graduate.  At the same time, do we really want our money to go toward this totally unnecessary, “kinda cool” project?? I personally don’t, there are far better things that my money could be doing than funding a brick project.  The ASG administration has no idea how many bricks have been purchased, either.  I think the entire project is bogus!

To all the Greeks complaining about the editorial saying that Greeks who don’t vote to support DeGarmo “will be paddled”.  I’m sorry, that’s just good humor! There’s even an ed-board disclaimer saying that they don’t actually believe that will happen.  No reason to mindlessly yell to defend your Greek-life! Take it with a grain of salt; realize that it’s humorous and an obvious hyperbole.

I’m open to comments and criticism.  Bring it on! I’ll even go ahead and admit I did not research this as thoroughly as I may have for an article and if I am misguided in any of my statements I welcome you to shed light on facts I’m unaware of.

hellloooo on this gorgeous day!

Today is a beautiful day!! And I just watched the movie Morning Glory with Rachel McAdams, Diane Keaton, Harrison Ford, and Jeff Goldbloom...it was fabulous! I'm always a sucker for the movies about girls making it in the journalism industry, though...Devil Wears Prada...fab! haha
This one, however, also had intriguing camera angles...so that was a plus!

Definitely recommend! :)

Now here's some awesome music for this fabulous day:

Pumped up Kicks- Foster the People
i LOVE this song...it makes me happy...it's been stuck in my head for about 3 days, and to top it off...they are all super attractive ;)

Sail- AWOLnation
This song has a fabulous beat! AWOLnation is a pretty awesome band and this video is pretty awesome.  I first heard this song over the summer when a classmate of mine got an opportunity to make a video for it for a Red Bull Records contest while AWOLnation was in Austin. I heard it again about a month ago on my favorite Austin radio station(101.5FM) and finally downloaded it last night...AH-mazing!

Label my Mind Blown- Electric President
I used to ride around Houston on gorgeous days like today in my friend's convertible with the top down and jam this song! I lost it and the cd she gave me a while back and have been searching for it forever! It isn't on iTunes and I completely forgot the name and could only remember pieces of lyrics....I FINALLY found it again last night! PUMPED! :)

now time to attempt to wake up the heaviest sleeper i know and get her to go on a walk with me before the sun goes down... :)

enjoy, lovvees!!
